In a significant move to enhance tourism and streamline transportation for visitors, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced new regulations allowing international tourists to drive within the country. The Saudi General Directorate of Traffic, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, revealed these updated guidelines aimed at facilitating a smoother experience for tourists while ensuring road safety and compliance with local laws.

According to the official statement released by the Saudi Press Agency on March 15, 2024, tourists visiting the Kingdom will be permitted to drive vehicles using their valid international driving licenses or those issued from their home countries, subject to meeting specific criteria and presenting required documentation.

Key Requirements for Tourists to Drive in Saudi Arabia:

1. Valid International Driving Permit (IDP) or a valid driving license from the visitor's home country 2. Original passport with a valid tourist visa 3. Proof of comprehensive vehicle insurance coverage for the duration of stay 4. Completion of a brief online road safety orientation course 5. Age requirement: Minimum 21 years old for regular vehicles, 23 years old for motorcycles

Required Documents (in English):

1. International Driving Permit (IDP) or home country driving license with certified English translation 2. Passport with valid tourist visa 3. Vehicle rental agreement (if applicable) 4. Proof of insurance coverage 5. Certificate of completion for the online road safety orientation course

Dr. Abdullah Al-Mutlaq, Director General of the Saudi Traffic Department, stated, "These new regulations aim to strike a balance between facilitating tourism and maintaining our commitment to road safety. We welcome visitors to experience the Kingdom's hospitality while adhering to our traffic laws and safety standards."

The online road safety orientation course, available in multiple languages including English, covers essential topics such as local traffic rules, road signs, and cultural considerations specific to driving in Saudi Arabia. Upon successful completion, tourists will receive a digital certificate valid for the duration of their stay, up to a maximum of three months.

This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and boost tourism. The Kingdom aims to attract 100 million annual visits by 2030, making it crucial to provide convenient transportation options for international visitors.

Tourists can apply for the driving authorization through the official Visit Saudi website or mobile application. The process is designed to be quick and efficient, with approvals typically granted within 24-48 hours of submission.

It's important to note that these regulations apply specifically to short-term visitors on tourist visas. Expatriates residing in Saudi Arabia on work or study visas are still required to obtain a Saudi driving license through the standard application process.

As Saudi Arabia continues to open its doors to international tourism, these new driving regulations represent a significant step towards creating a more accessible and visitor-friendly environment, while maintaining the Kingdom's commitment to road safety and orderly traffic management.
